About Me!

Central, FL, United States
I am a former teacher, aspiring artist, inveterate traveler This blog is about my Florida garden experience and its expression though poetry, philosophy, photography and art. It includes my other creative endeavors. Here can be found posts about travel to other gardens around the world. My garden is a half acre in zone 9a which includes a large water garden. I have mostly a shade garden because of the huge live oak. To keep things easy, I love to grow bromiliads, ferns, gingers and other tropicals. I need to have a low maintenance garden. In the summer we usually have plenty of rain and it transforms into a jungle. I have converted my swamp into the water garden where I grow irises, waterlilies, papyrus, radigan, spikebush and swamp lily. I also grow citrus (lemon, key lime, grapefruit, tangerines, pineapple, and loquats). Me?...Often the prickly thorn produces tender roses. (Ovid)

2013- a mixed bag so far

Yes, it's 2013 and a new year is upon us. A whole year of posts to start thinking about. I'm off to a bad start! I have not posted of late as I have been ill.

"How's the weather?".you ask. People have been noticing the unusually warm weather here in Florida We have  had record temperatures  .It's been in the 80's and hasn't been this warn since 1973.  We will soon be Zone 10 if this keeps up.  Anyone reading here doubt the global warming still? So, I bask in the hammock with not a thought of writing. I am the Lazy Woman. after all!  The yard has taken care of itself. But the trees and plants really think it is March. (like these plum trees) And who knew grass could actually grow in January?

Can anyone tell me the name of this succulent? When we were kids we would pop these flowers before they opened

On a positive note I have completed a painting. And after I was done I had it for lunch! The title is Pears and Brie Inside of Me.

  1. Hey! Glad you're back! I hope you are feeling better! Yep global warming is upon us...we have had no snow here in Chicago at all! Don't know what that means for the spring. As for that painting of yours it completely rocks! Oils?? I have been trying my hand with acrylics due to the mineral spirits with my little beans. As for your bad vibe guy next door...I have one too...she is behind us. My son is extremely allergic to peanuts and she wildly feeds the animals peanuts which end up all over our yard--this after I told her of his condition...Who knows?!?! Love my pals on the other sides of us so I try to focus on them. All the best to you in the new year!

  4. Sure is a mixed bag ;-)
so, it can never be too warm for me, except our peach trees, they miss the chill hours and sulk. No fruits for me.... and so sorry about your neighbor, you can always hope for them to move some day...
    And what a lovely painting!!

  5. Hi Sharon, I hope you're feeling better. I love your painting--it's beautiful! I know remodeling is a pain, but how exciting--I bet it's going to be awesome when it's finished!

  6. We have had unusually warm weather for about a week, but winter weather has returned with the possibility of a little snow. Your painting is lovely with such subtle strokes and color.

  8. It's been an unusually warm January in CT too. Although January can be cruel so I can't complain about more moderate weather.

I was going to suggest that maybe your neighbor has early signs of Alzheimers until you said he was only 50. Maybe early onset? A gun in the hands of a nut is never good. Take care.

One of the best people to help you identify a succulent is Debra Lee Baldwin. She's written a couple of books and she's on Facebook under a couple of different pages. I note that you grow irises. I'm in Jacksonville (9b??) and have had no luck with bearded irises. Everything I've read indicates I should grow Louisiana iris. I don't see a search button on your blog to help me look for your iris lore.

Sharon - your painting is beautiful!

Maybe you should bake your neighbor a chocolate pie (does the book or movie "Help" come to mind?) OK - I'm totally kidding here . . . . !

From a Florida gardner loving this warm weather,

  11. I think I've enjoyed this post more than any I've read. First of all get well soon. Sometimes blogging needs to take a backseat. Secondly, I have that same succulent and am so bummed no one has identified it. Mine bloomed beautifully last summer and was so unique. It comes in the house in the winter and looks very sad right now. Love love love your painting! That will surely make you feel better-painting. Now the neighbor, yup, I've got em. Some of mine might even say I am one but I don't think so. It is so hard to deal with neighbors. Sometimes I try to change my thinking instead of getting upset-it works occasionally. Like a barking dog, drives me crazy all hours of the night. I decided to friend the lonely dog and feed it. Ha! My stress on that dog went down now if I could deal with the other 10! You should be proud to stand your ground. Your neighbor must have some serious issues. Just smile and understand that and you'll be fine. btw-gigantic privacy fences help a lot. Good luck with remodeling.

  12. I hope things will get better between you and your gun toting neighbour. The way he rants sounds rather worrisome. I like the way you blend the colours of the pear splendidly and that wedge of brie is just asking to be eaten :) Wishing you the best of health in 2013.

  15. It's amazing that you have painted such a beautiful, peaceful painting with everything that is going on! It shows you have found a place of happiness and joy with your art. Limit your exposure to toxic people, they are bad for your health!

  17. Beautiful painting, Sharon! I love the soft colors. I'm really sorry about your neighbor. I once had a similar neighborhood trouble so I can understand how irritating the guy is. I agree with tina: "Just smile and understand that you'll be fine." You are really a lovely soul!! Take good care of yourself!! Many hugs from me.

  19. I saw your comment on My Garden Diaries about your painting so naturally, I had to come check it out. Also in regard to your comment on how acrylic dries too fast for you, you can buy a fixative to put in it to make it dry slower... like oils.

Love the painting!!! I really like the how the oranges in the pears complement the blues in your gray background. Yay for complementary colors! I also love the texture on the top of your cheese.

Would love for you to drop by toddlindsey.com :)

    Keep up the great painting!
