The Night-Blooming Cereus
FLOWER of the moon!
Still white is her brow whom we worshiped on earth long ago;
Yea, purer than pearls in deep seas, and more virgin than snow.
The dull years veil their eyes from her shining, and vanish afraid,
Nor profane her with age—the immortal, nor dim her with shade.
It is we are unworthy, we worldlings, to dwell in her ways;
We have broken her altars and silenced her voices of praise.
She hath hearkened to singing more silvern, seen raptures more bright;
To some planet more pure she hath fled on the wings of the night,—
Flower of the moon!
Yet she loveth the world that forsook her, for, lo! once a year
She, Diana, translucent, pale, scintillant, down from her sphere
Floateth earthward like star-laden music, to bloom in a flower,
And our hearts feel the spell of the goddess once more for an hour.
See! she sitteth in splendor nor knoweth desire nor decay,
And the night is a glory around her more bright than the day,
And her breath hath the sweetness of worlds where no sorrow is known;
And we long as we worship to follow her back to her own,—
Flower of the moon!

Yours is a much fuller show than mine, Sharon. Downright tropically beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMy mother has grown these for years. I remember as a teenager going outside at night with her to look at them blooming. Marvellous aren't they - and so are your photos!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing flower and I'm so impressed with the quality of the Iphone photos.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this since i was a child. Thanks for bring back the memories - they are starting to flood in now.
I have absolutely no words right now...I think that poem sums it all up beautifully! Those blooms are a gift from God! My only wish is that I could see them in person! I would just hang out there all night...are you thinking of painting these??? Gorgeous friend! I hope you are well...Nicole
ReplyDeleteSharon, your iphone is perfect, I love these nighty photos, pretty flowers!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!

ReplyDeleteOh, how beautiful and magical!
ReplyDeleteHello Sharon, thanks for your 'visit in Switzerland' ! It gave me the opportunity to come back to your blog (I had lost the address) and to discover lots of interesting posts. But this night bloomer seems just magical to me, I never had seen such a marvellous plant ! So I really enjoyed your pictures. I am sometimes kind of jalous of your climate... we already have winter here, mountains around are topped with snow and I had to shelter my 'exotic' plants in the greenhouse. The garden will be asleep for about 5 months now...
ReplyDeleteI have heard a lot about this plant but never actually seen it, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat an experience this night flowers will bring you Sharon. I wish I could smell her fragance. Never, ever seen and heard about it before.
ReplyDeletePure magic.
Have a wonderful day.
What snow-whit beautiful flower they are! And fragrance,too. It looks like a kind of cactus. If it's so, I have seen red flower of that kind.
ReplyDeleteTokyo is wonderful city. I also like it.
Have a nice week!
Dear Sharon,
ReplyDeleteLong time no see. I had a break for more than a month. Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my posts. I really appreciate it.
Your moon flowers are so beautiful, so magical, and so pure. They look like they come from FAIRY LAND or from another dimension where vibrations are much subtler than on Earth. I love white flowers because of their elegance!! Have a nice weekend, Sharon!!
